Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your content visible, quotable, and citable inside AI-generated answers: Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini.   • Presence in the lists AI reads. Directory profiles, chamber listings, and industry roundups feed the training and retrieval pipelines. Being in them is a citation strategy, not vanity.

What to do first

Test it. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI mode the questions your customers ask, and note who gets named. That is your gap. Then fix entity consistency, add answer blocks and schema to your money pages, and build the review and directory footprint AI engines treat as trust signals.

GEO overlaps heavily with strong local SEO, which is good news: the same disciplined work compounds in both places. Do not chase unproven hacks. Get cited by being the clearest, most specific answer in your market.
